Female Frisbee League

If a man can play sport, why can’t a woman? If a man is a human, is a woman is human too?

Man and woman are having equal right in anything but society shaped woman to be less powerful than man. This is the world we’re all living in. This is the problem that we all need to tackle for the rights of every human being.

Female Frisbee League is a project that creates the first Cambodian frisbee league that is replicable and scalable, enabling empowerment of rural girls in Cambodia, challenging female stereotyping, through the facilitation of a more gender-equitable environment.

It was easy to motivate girls to play frisbee but it was hard to motivate them to train under the hot sun. But we still have many girls show up at the training. That’s my motivation to keep sacrificing my Saturday for the training. It’s a new sport for girls and Cambodia. But the girls did a great job during the training. Their smiles, encouragement, and teamwork inspired me to keep working hard with my team to make the league run smoothly. It turns out that everything went really well. We got Smart as our sponsor and we partner with the ministry to work with the schools in Kampong Speu. They’re very supportive which I believe that the frisbee project runs smoothly and hopefully can be replicated to other schools around Cambodia.

My main role in the project is a communicator between our sponsor and Liger. I need to contact Smart frequently to keep them update and get everything my team needs. I like this position because I can improve my networking skill with a wide range of people/companies. I also believe that it’s a good opportunity to show my skill to open up my job market in the future in the networking field. Moreover, I am a frisbee trainer.

I want to see every human being have an equal right in this world. This is my vision and this is my belief for Cambodia: everyone has the same opportunity and apart of the change-maker for this country.

Keep The Pack Exploration

Keep The Pack is a project that’s focusing on creating a campaign to decrease packaging. We believe that some products do not need a lot of packaging but the company tends to do them for beauty. We targeted through Facebook, Keep The Pack, because according to our research many Cambodian use Facebook. That’s why we choose to have that platform to spread the word around.

Keep The Pack logo

My role in Keep The Pack is a Facebook manager where I need to create many creative videos that’s catchy and short and different challenges about reducing plastic packaging.

This video is about Mother’s Day where I try to convey a message of showing a love their mother and the earth godmother by not using plastic.

Use less of the Useless

Do you realize how much packaging we all accept every day? Things like boxes, wrappers, bags, etc. When we get home, a lot of this gets thrown away in just a few minutes. Let's make companies stop using unnecessary packaging by refusing to accept it. #KeepThePack #UseLessOfTheUseless

Solar Pi Exploration | 2018_2019

Education is not a physical thing but its logical element of how we structure our brain. Education will help to guide people throughout life in decision-making and evaluating. It’s an element of life.

If we go back to Cambodia history, we can understand why many Cambodians’ education is still limited: war and revolution. Lack of accessibility to education is one thing but students interest in learning is a big part. In order to gain their interest, my team and I must invest a lot of time and effort to it because we had many issues due to lack of communication with the school and also our team, time management, miss school, and technical errors. But we always kept pushing ourselves to work hard and positively solve those facets to help to fulfil the students future. Now, both labs are in Takeo which will be easier for us to visit by having one trip that will go to both schools.

I don’t have a specific role for the team for this year because I just got back and it seems like everyone does everything. Basically, we share works so that we can speed up the process because we want everything to run smoothly for the next school year.

I hope my time in the exploration has impacted the group and also the students to be ready for their future. It’s my vision: create change for Cambodia; I will keep working hard for the future of Cambodia.

MINOR ACT INTERNSHIP|Battambang

Life is art. So does it means that art is life?

Well, life is a form of art even when we’re drinking water, walk, sleep, and etc.

Art is “the various branches of creative activity, such as painting, music, literature, and dance” as Google definition expressed.

Art is a “skill acquired by experience, study, or observation” as Merriam Webster defines. “The art of making friends” as Merriam Webster example.

Personally, I think art is everything, as I address above; and it’s not just in a way that we act, it’s also the art of how we think, feel, and etc.

But what I fascinated about is music. Music is my mentor. Music is my guide. Music is my friend. Music is my soul. Music is life. Life’s full of problems. It’s a fact. But what you do when you face those facet?

Do you give up?

Do you talk to someone to try to solve the problem?

Do you feel like it’s over?

Well, music is a word that Google describes “vocal or instrumental sounds (or both) combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.” I believe many people do believe that. But what powerful about music is you can express your emotion, struggles, and etc through it by listening or singing or writing a song. What I considered about songwriting is I can help others to feel better through my story because some people may have a similar story. Personally, I don’t hide my feeling to myself because it will keep me stuck with that feeling. So I write and I sing. By writing songs of a true story, I understand more about the society and problems that many people impact the environment around them which inspire me to really involve in social issues. I often help people who have depression or stuck in problems. I started to really focus on music more to try to solve their problem by writing different songs and sometimes I even talk to them to really comfort them. Not just that, I always update my social status and posts about social problems and awareness. That’s who I am and that’s how I solve problems. I believe that changes come from what I believe and I don’t have to be a president to be a changemaker because changes appeared before even before human know what’s fire. In short, that’s who I am and that what I choose.

Everything that I have today is coming from what I’ve been through. Well, one of the best opportunity in the film industry is the internship for Minor Act. Well, Minor Act is non-profit  media entrepreneurship and film production training house for young adults from structurally disadvantaged societies.” I’ve been their intern for about 3 months at Battambang to create a movie written by my team from the Liger Leadership Academy. It was such an amazing experience that we had a chance to work with professional film production. So, my main role for this internship is music producer which I write songs and sing for the movie. On the other hand, all of the interns were basically switched role every day so that everyone got a chance to experience each skill. Through that internship, I gained a lot of knowledge about cinematic skills such as set design, better produce quality song and soundtrack, director, assistant director, acting, and how to use our imagination effectively. These skills improved me to be a better thinker, aware of all sides; management skill, leadership skill, networking skill, electronic music skill, and work with other Khmer musician.

People at my school thought we were having fun and don’t have to do much school work. The reality was not like what they thought. We actually worked even more than them. Some days we woke up very early morning like 2 am and sometimes 3 am to make sure all the actors were starting to get their makeup on and also our gears ready to go when the sun started to rise. That’s just for the morning, but how about the night because some nights we were shooting until 3 AM and once we got home it was morning and we can’t really sleep. It was very tuff especially when we’re young, underage. But that’s how it works. If you’re really committing to this field, you just accepted the fact that its tuff. Especially when you’re at the shoot you must do everyone quickly and plan before because the director can change their mind at any point and at any second. That was our problem when we were at the internship. I got blames literally almost every day. But we managed to finish the internship proudly. I can’t forget the final day of our shoot which only the interns actually ran the shot without Minor Act help. We were a little nervous but we did an amazing job on that day.

We all consider change is happening every day. But the change due to my life through this internship is very unique. I can say it’s a life-changing for me because of how I view myself and the world is different. I care more about the surrounding, the people, and the future. I realized that my critical thinking is very improving such that I can control my anger better and also how I handle the situation. What I can say about my personality change is that my leadership skill actually boosts up by a lot if I compare to before I join.  Lastly, these are the quotes that I learned from my internship:

“Work for quality, not quantity.”

“Music isn’t about being nice sounding, but the meaning.”

“Believe that everything is possible because you can create impossible.”

“Everything is a decision. Whether you do it or not, it’s still our decision.”

Literacy: “The Rent Collector”

What’s cool about this year for my literacy class was that I’ve been chosen to be a part of the Liger Leadership team. The lessons for the class were very enjoyable and I felt like I love literacy more than before. Personally, I don’t really like reading and when I read something, I don’t really understand it. But, after Cara introduced me to The Rent Collecter book, I really enjoyed reading the story and it has changed my life. My perspective toward the world and life have changed after reading this inspiring story.

Solar Pi Exploration

I have attended in Solar Pi exploration which helps to install the computer labs for two government schools in Takeo province and in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. The government schools are facing many problems with lack of technology education and limited to electricity. Our group wanted a computer lab to run on a solar panel system because it is environmental-friendly. Moreover, we intend to provide three curriculums with the computer labs, one being an English learning curriculum designed for Khmer speakers, teaching 3D design, and basic coding. I believe the new English program that we’re going to implement will improve students English skill a lot. Besides that, we’re also doing an evaluation of the English program and the 3D design to see if the program can be implemented in all government school or not. With a strong support from the Ministry of Education Youth and Sport, we’re lucky to make this plan going well.

Visited Chous School at Takeo to give a pre-test before implementing the English program schedule.

Last week, our team went to install the computer labs at Toul Prasat Sen Sok High School and did the students training as well as teachers training. For students, we were explaining about the English program and the main tool of the program that needed to know before using the computer labs. Basically, it was an amazing day which we gave full energy to work for the future plans.

Moreover, I am responsible for checking up the progress of the English program in Takeo. So I will go to the school every month to follow up the school and also collect data from our system there. I love this project and as mentioned it’s my passion, so I really enjoy and enthusiastic about this project as always.

New Hope for Cambodian Children Trip Reflection(HIV/AIDS Exploration)

Along the way to New Hope for Cambodian Children foundation(NHCC), I was thinking about how they look because when I was young I have heard from other people saying that PLHIV looks skinny. But after I’ve been there, everything is opposite. Everyone were healthy and they live happily. The reason that we all have many expectations or stigma and myth about HIV because we’re uneducated about HIV.

Those kids that were in NHCC were orphans because their parents died from HIV/AIDS and their relative don’t want them and gave them to NHCC; but some of them, their parent don’t want them because they have HIV and they don’t want to spend money on the treatment. Those kids don’t have any place to go and if no one helps them they’ll die quickly. NHCC is the new home and new hope for them.

I still remember a boy learning in grade 4, coming from Kampong Cham since he was young and he has no idea who his parent was, his village or district. He mentioned that NHCC was his home and in the future, he wants to be a doctor. Then I continue asking why does he want to become a doctor and he replied that he wants to help other people in this world. He had made my day.

At NHCC, we’ve eaten launch with them and playing soccer as well. I felt like they are just a regular people like us, those myths and stigma are trash. They can do everything just like us.

In term of having HIV, you’ll face many problems such as education because the school will not open many opportunities for them and even if they want to be an employee they can’t too, as long as they keep the secret about it. If they don’t have job, they don’t have money to feed themself and health care or treatments. No one wants to take care PLHIV because of people stigmatization and myth about it, but mainly they are uneducated about HIV. Many of orphanage rejected to PLHIV and don’t care about their life. But again only NHCC is their new home, new hope.
